Eligibility Requirements
We typically enroll all applicants that meet the below requirements. We do prefer to meet with each applicant to ensure they understand our program and it’s commitments.
university
Be admitted to the University of Michigan or one of our nine crosstown affiliated universities.
full-time status
Be a full-time student, able to maintain full-time status for at least three years. This can be for a first or second bachelor’s degree, or graduate degree.
age
Be at least 14 years old with parental/guardian consent. Must be at least 17 with parental consent in order to activate a scholarship, or contract with AFROTC in the later parts of the program. The maximum age to commission as an officer in most jobs is 42.
citizenship
Provide original birth certificate or proof of naturalization or US passport to certify US Citizenship.
physical shape
Be medically fit to participate (complete a sports physical).
background check
Have a clean criminal record, or obtain waivers necessary to enter the program.
Conditions that may preclude your entry into AFROTC
Below are just some of the conditions that may prohibit your enrollment into AFROTC. Please meet with the detachment staff to clarify any concerns with potential disqualification before making the assumption.
Concientious objectors
Conscientious objectors: one who has or had a firm, fixed, and sincere objection to participation in war, in any form, or to the bearing of arms because of personal beliefs.
citizenship
Must be able to obtain U.S. citizenship in order to continue to advanced training (Field Training, Professional Officer Course)
Medical Conditions
Medical conditions or diagnoses found to be unfit for service by the Department of Defense Medical Evaluation Review Board (DoDMERB)
previous officer training
Individuals who have dropped out of a previous officer training program
